Social Media Adds New Spice to Old Brand

by Kathy Northcutt

With all the chatter about social media strategy and marketing these days, it’s refreshing to see a truly buzz-worthy campaign in action.

Old Spice, meet Isaiah Mustafa. The former football player is the new but already well-known cyber-spokesmodel for the popular brand. You may remember him from the Super Bowl commercial where he spoofed the heroes of Harlequin romance novels.

Not only does Mustafa have over 640,000 Facebook fans and 84,000 Twitter followers, but he’s answered questions posted from these individuals by name, and often in a personalized YouTube video message – causing a fan-frenzy that hasn’t let up since the campaign started. His video @replies on Twitter include celebs, media and other fans.

So what’s the takeaway for government relations professionals? Old Spice may be a line of men’s grooming products – but you can still gather valuable tips on how to refresh your own social media campaigns:

  • Make it personal:  If you want to connect with your audience – you need to build a relationship with them and consistently engage them in issues affecting your industry. Make your communications as personalized as possible.
  • Invite people to join:  What good is it to post on blogs, Facebook, or Twitter if nobody is reading, liking, or following you? Maintain a consistent outreach program to recruit new members.
  • Become a good listener:  Monitor your social media channels – they’re a great way to take the pulse of your audience on a weekly and often daily basis.
  • Realize that one size doesn't fit all: What works for one organization or industry, may not fit for another. That’s why DDC Advocacy offers optional Facebook Apps to enhance your current advocacy program.
